Heart of the City

Hollywood is the face.
Glitz and beauty.
Flashing cameras,
botox,
and unrealistic situations.

Downtown is the brains.
Financiers high in their towers.
Deals brokered.
Making.
Breaking.

The ports stretch their fingers
in search of foreign treasures.
The freeways circulate the blood
to home and work and back again.

But the East,
is the heart.
Oft forgotten
and hard working.
Pumping laborers,
artists, and moguls alike.
Beating despite the low expectations.
A sign of enduring love.

I don't technically live in East L.A., but I do live about 2 miles away. The whole area gets a bad rap. I went all around the city this weekend and there's no soul like there is in East L.A. I wanted to give the east some well deserved love.

I love the metaphor here and am jealous that I never thought of it but that's what I get for living in the OC. I think you have LA figured out. I especially like the metaphors of the third stanza. I think the poem could use some refinement, as it is a little wordy at times, but the idea behind this is strong. Good stuff.
