memento mori

a poem died today
and in its place
we find these words—
an inadequate eulogy—
veiled in black,
sulking in stature.
we could not bury, burn,
or donate the remains to science
because they never existed,
yet we are here
at the bodyless funeral
to commemorate
the misremembered.

I originally wanted this poem to look like a headstone but it proved too difficult without distorting the meaning. Enjoy.
