Orlando Woolridge

Orange windmills
whirling high
in the air
creating perfect circles.

Zero.
Everything
or nothing.
A number built
to forget.
Unless it's Orlando.
A God in purple and gold.

The ball
appeared into his hand
as if by Magic
and he
cut,
sliced,
stabbed,
in
for 2.

When I hear the word
Orlando
I don't think of
saccharin sweet
amusement parks
or Shakesperian comedies.
my mind instantly sees
orange windmills.

So, I had been meaning to write this for a while, and Edward's Jordan made me respond. I am not sure if you remember Orlando Woolridge. He was only a Laker for 2 seasons from 89-91 I believe. He was a God to my brother and I. And he was number 0.Before Shaq he was the hardest dunker that I'd ever seen. Take that Barkley. I want to start writing about heroes. It seems like a natural choice for me because I always write about my #1 hero: my Grandfather, but Orlando was so awesome I wanted to give him the respect that he deserves.

I vaguely remember Woolridge, though only the name and not from his ferocious dunks. Yours is a flattering tribute to him. I like the image of the orange windmills, and the word "orange" plays well with "Orlando." The reference to Magic, Disney, and Shakespeare are seamlessly interwoven into the poem as well. Delicious stuff! I look forward to reading more of your Hero Poems.

You both know I'm a Laker hater, but I always loved Orlando Woolridge and this is a fitting tribute to him. I like the orange windmills imagery and I really dig the second stanza. So much so, that I think the poem might work just as well if you start with the second stanza and the word "Zero" while moving the first stanza to be second. Just a thought.

P.S. Isn't the poll you posted a little biased? You're both lucky I hate Boston more than the Lakers, but I refuse to vote on your fanboy poll... LOL

It's funny that you say that Brent, because I had originally written it that way and then added the first stanza in my final draft.
P.S.S. I didn't post the poll, but I did vote twice.
