Old Friend

Where did you go, Poetry?
I knew you well.
We had late night conversations,
in the backyard,
half-drunk on Pabst and ego.

We agonized together
Crafting sloppy stanzas.
Went on long hot car trips,
and finished each others sentences.

Then I lost you.
Are you buried under deep
New England snow?
Or wandering dingy California
Supermarkets?

I'm bombarded by images
of psuedo-celebrities.
Forced to care
about teen music sensations
and I forget about you.
My friend.

But every so often
I read a piece of mail
or hear a Mascis tune
wind through my ears.
I see a clever alliterative phrase.
And I think "hello there old friend".

This really started as one idea, and ended up as another. I had a ton of refernces to other poets, but I just kept the veiled references to Frost and Ginsberg. I think that the last stanza is weird. Instead of piece of mail I had "note from a friend" but I think it was confusing. I also don't expect anyone to know who J. Mascis is (Singer, guitarist, songwriter for Dinosaur Jr.) I was just listening to them this morning, and he isn't the conventional singer/poet type.

The veiled references are awesome, Chris, and you really do capture those prolonged spans of time when we neglect poetry, as well as that tinge of inspiration that draws us back in.

wtf is a Dinosaur Jr.?

This is a feeling known by anyone who puts pen to paper to compose verse, and you truly capture it. I completely relate.

And, I actually really like the last stanza; it doesn't seem weird at all.
