A Mishmash of Hogwash

I.

I dined with an angel today,
who, with his wings expanded,
insisted, "God exists!"
I nodded agreeably,
licking the crumbs
of my Devil's Food Cake,
as he preached on.

II.

An angel appeared on my shoulder,
and asked me, "Why do you sin?"

I retorted, "Because I am made in the image of your god."
He shrugged his shoulders and poofed away.

III.

I swatted an angel buzzing about.
It fell into my lap,
shook its fist at me,
eyes glaring with the fury
of a thousand suns,
"You're going to hell!"
I mashed my thumbprint on its face,
flicked it into the fireplace,
and thought nothing more of it.

IV.

Outside the supermarket,
I saw an old lady struggle with her groceries.

"Can I help you with those?" I asked.
She responded, "Oh, what an angel."

Despite her comment,
I mustered half my own smile,
and heaved her bags.

I wrote this a while ago, but felt like revisiting it and making a few changes.

Oh Stephen Crane back from the dead. I love this because it is extremely Edward. And I like the radical progression from I. a discussion about God to III. flicking and incinerating the angel. to IV. real life application of these feelings. This is unmistakably my friend Edward.

I thought immediately about Crane after reading this. The difference being that Crane was way more bleak, while Edward's speaker seems more fed up with the popular concept of god. It's really good stuff.

In part II, I wonder why "God" is capitalized considering the speaker mentions it.

I like the title!
I didn't think of Crane, but I did enjoy the "matter-of fact" tone and commentary. The speaker is interesting, I want to know more about him (or her). I also enjoyed how it is wrapped around traditional themes, yet comes across as so modern.

Thanks for the comments all! I took your advice, Brent. I like "god" better. I'm still not satisfied with the precision of my words quite yet, but this is my favorite poem that I've posted thus far.

This actually made me think more of the Romantics, especially Blake.

I like the playful tone of this poem. I was smiling from start to finish. Very witty.

Nice poem Edward!
