One day,
A statue in his image
Will greet rejuvenated fans
As they enter the stadium,
But not yet.
Eventually,
He’ll travel the states
Signing a best-seller
That details his passed success,
But not today.
Soon,
His protégé will step in
To rebuild a bleeding tradition
That he once sweat to create,
But not now.
Instead,
The bronze resides uncast.
The page remains blank.
Arthritic hands clutch slipping reigns.
He’s all they’ve ever known
And he wants to keep it that way
As long as possible.
He’s earned it
Regardless of results.
