Piracy

Their ships still sail
among the torrents,
within the world-
wide web of enforcement,
to a code beyond right
or wrong.

And those raided protest
as their coffers shrink—
hardly enough to
cease a trade
marked by private exploits—

So the industry strums on.

Yet these swashbucklers
hack away
anonymously
at the greater tyranny
that’s been accepted
far too long.

There's that classic Vogelman wit again. I love the overt connections between the piracy of today and yesteryear. The "torrent" and "hack away" lines are particularly brilliant.

Wow! I'm reading all these new poems after my last, and I'm seriously in awe, with no empty flattery. It's great to see the activity ramping up here again, not to mention the quality of the activity.

The language feels so precise in this poem; the metaphors meticulous. And though Chris already mentioned it, I must second the perfect use of "torrent" and "hack away."

I've long condemned piracy. I'm such a hypocrite. I downloaded all of the first season of Game of Thrones. I try to justify this by telling myself I'm going to buy it on Bluray anyway. Sigh...I disgust myself.
