I searched my pocket
for change
and scanned the streets
for a payphone.
Home was always
a few cents away.
Now,
I search my pocket
for my cell phone
and when you don't answer
I assume you're avoiding me.
I scoured my car
for a cd.
Beloved songs
slid under the passenger seat.
Now,
I scour my car
for an iPod,
The thousands of songs
that I never listen to.
I hunted the record store
for rare musical treasures.
Each new find
a cause for delight.
Now,
I hunt the internet
for songs that I recognize,
stealing music
indiscriminantly.
On occasion
I think of those archaic days,
wonder how we survived,
and smile at the thought
of the advances
that tomorrow will bring.

I was thinking about adding 2 more stanzas abotu social networking, but I have to give my kid a bath now. Perhaps I will augment this when time permits.
It's crazy how fast things advance. 100 years ago cars barely existed. My friend just got a 55 inch tv and I was commenting how a 3d tv would soon take its place and then a hologram projector. Things are changing that fast.
This poem speaks for how quickly we adapt to these new technologies to the point where we wouldn't know what to do without them. The last stanza seems too optimistic for a Chris Andrews poem. Are you ok? :D
