Secrecy

The wooden paddle
In the bottom drawer
Of the principal’s desk—
A tardiness warning.

The teasing classmate
Who swears he saw
You waiting for the city bus—
Two towns away.

The ex-neighbor’s favor—
A recent utility bill
Presented to the school
As proof of residence.

The sacrifices
For living
Out of district.
