Take Me Out

The pitcher looks in,
Sets at the belt,
Begins the wind,
And delivers:
Peanuts! Cracker Jacks!

This wild pitch—
A pastimal hazard
With a prize inside.

Seeking—
The strikeless
Perfect game /
The avoided
Batter up.

The pop of the glove,
The crack of the bat—
The auxiliary sounds
Unmentioned by our game’s anthem.

I am exhausted. I just got back from the Angels game--a 12-2 shellacking by the Brewers (softened by this last weekend's sweep of the Dodgers though). So this is what I got. I'll try reading everybody's stuff tomorrow. Good night!

I was worried that you might miss a day, buddy: you're ability to consistently produce, and produce quality work, is inspiring.

I looked up pastimal to make sure it wasn't a word, only so that I can give you kudos for creating a much needed adjective for the English language.

The second stanza is my favorite, alluding to both the Cracker Jacks and the game. Good stuff for a midnight write after an exhausting day!

This isn't bad for being exhausted... I love the sound working in here. Sound is often ignored when people write about sports, yet it is an important element of the game and you capture it.
