I sat at the controls of the champion kart
in all its 32-bit splendor.
Unrivaled, turboing along
the skyways of Rainbow Road,
red shell unnecessary,
tossing banana peels
and leaving skid marks
for the Princess and her Captor.
Nowadays,
everything I do is at speed limit,
rainbows shine in monochrome,
and any fairy tale I once lived
has come to a screeching halt.

Apologies. It's clear that my ink is running dry today.
On a more cheerful note, welcome back Brandi and Tim! I'm glad to hear that you're now feeling better, Brandi! And no need to apologize for MIA, Tim; I hope your CA trip allowed for a bit of fun in between all the work.
I'm a bit drained today, but I have read all the poems posted and intend to comment (more likely tomorrow than tonight). Cheers!
I thought the second half of the poem was remarkable. The line "rainbows shine in monochrome" brings such a loss of innocence to the surface. I was a fanatic SMB player... yes, the princess was saved many times back in my day, but there's a sad undertone filtering throughout this poem--
This has a nice melancholic tone.
I like how you juxtapose the SMK in the first stanza against against reality in the second stanza w/ "speed limit."
The length of the 2nd stanza also seems to lend to the "reality" of life (if there is such a thing); that is, the fading of the fantastical that comes with age.
If it's Mario Kart 64 my friend Yoshi and I will upset your woodpile and make you cry.I love the overall theme of lost innocence. I want more Mario Kartness. I am going to write a poetry response to this.
So I have to admit, I sucked at Mario Kart. I'm more of a sports game guy. Nevertheless, I agree with Brandi and really like the second stanza. If your ink is running dry it really started to flow again once you hit the second stanza. It's damn depressing but that's what makes it so effective. I also like how it brings the poem full circle.
I think the first stanza could use a little work. I want to feel rushed through it because it seems a little wordy at times. After all, SMK is a racing game.
