Watch closely.
Mysteries unlock
behind smoke and mirrors
(and in the night),
cowled in dark recesses
of a mind lost
in infinite light.

I think there's space to play around with this more. I'd like to write more poems on artists, and I wrote this trying to mimic an older poem of mine on Kurosawa, which I may return to tomorrow to post a revision of here. That said, I'm going to create an Artist label, which may inspire me to return to the topic from time to time.
I removed a Douglas Adams' quote that prefaced this poem: it completely overshadows the poem itself. The quote, which inspired some themes in the poem, is below:
"Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are faeries at the bottom of it too?" - Douglas Adams
Before I read your comment, I couldn't figure out who the hell Nolan was. But now I know and I dig this poem. You've made references to all of his movies. I'm going to give it a shot:
Memento = "a mind lost"
Insomnia = "infinite light"
The Prestige = "smoke and mirrors"
Batman I & II = "night" and "dark"
And then the whole poem seems to be a tribute to his new movie "Inception." Well done! As a big Nolan fan myself, maybe you could add something about his close-ups of hands which seems to big a signature shot of his.
I'm glad you caught most of the references, Brent. There are some that overlap: "Watch closely," alludes to the first line in The Prestige (which, and I know I'm in the minority, is my favorite of his films), and also to Christopher Nolan's first film, Following. I get the sense that the writer/director tends to lean towards similar protagonist: all cerebral, tragic antiheroes lost in their own obsessions.
Thanks for noting Nolan's signature shot: I've never noticed it; gives me an excuse to watch some of his films again, as well as something to play with if and when I return to this poem.
